Title: Know Your Rights: 5 Things Police Won’t Tell You When Arrested in Uganda

Being arrested can be terrifying, but knowledge is power. Under the Constitution of Uganda (1995) and the Criminal Procedure Code Act, you have rights even in handcuffs.

Here’s what you must demand:

  1. Right to Know the Offence: You have the right to be informed immediately, in a language you understand, of why you are being arrested. If they refuse, ask for the charge sheet.

  2. Right to a Lawyer at Your Own Cost: You are entitled to contact a lawyer immediately. If you cannot afford one, you have a right to be informed of this option (though legal aid is limited, try LAC or ULS).

  3. Right to Remain Silent: Anything you say can be used against you. You have the right to remain silent until your lawyer is present.

  4. Right to Be Brought to Court within 48 Hours: This is critical. Police cannot hold you for “more investigation” indefinitely. They must bring you to court within 48 hours of arrest (excluding travel time).

  5. Right to Medical Attention: If you are injured or ill, you have the right to be examined by a government doctor.

Don’t sign any statement under pressure. Read it first, or have your lawyer read it.
